NEW JERSEY TEEN ANGLERS Pequest 2011

Hello fellow Teen Anglers, My name is Bryan. I’m currently a sophomore in college, attending Monmouth University. I am currently studying to be a Marine and Environmental Biology and Policy major with a minor in Geography. I’ve been in Teen Anglers for two years, going on my third and final year. I figured I would write to anyone else who is going to start college, looking at college or those who just have a general interest in fish. College opened up a lot of new ideas and opportunities to me that will help me in the future. It has been a great, fun experience with many challenges along its way. I was able to do research my freshman year in the summer, working with my professor extracting otoliths from larval fish. Otoliths are structures in the fish’s ear that stabilize them for balance and help their survival with response to predator and prey. These structures grow like tree rings, and can tell us the age of the fish. This was a very difficulty task that I was very fortunate to experience because my professor said that it was an art form and was very hard. She also said that this could help me in my future for any jobs that may be trying to study fish. I look forward to hopefully working with my professor again this summer and see what new things I can experience. I still have two long years ahead of me but the courses I will be taking are dealing more with my major instead of being basic classes that the college requires. So far, college is a lot of fun and I have learned many things. You meet a lot of great people, whether they are friends or professors that help you throughout your four years. If anyone has any questions about college, Marine Biology, or even my research, feel free to contact me. (I’m sure many High School Seniors may have questions about college, because I know I did.) My email is Bryan.J.Hewins@Monmouth.edu. I look forward to any questions, comments or concerns that you may have.
Thank you Bryan, you have always been a big help to us!!!
Once you are a Teen Angler you are always a Teen Angler!
